We know that it was merely days from Palm Sunday that Christ held His Last Supper during the Passover. A feast we still celebrate each Sunday as Communion. There He predicted His death and resurrection, and He identified Himself with the bread and the wine as a means of remembering Him. All of this we recognize on this Thursday for a service known as Maundy Thursday.
The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word Mandatum which is translated “commandment.” In the context of Holy Week it refers to the commandment Jesus gave to his disciples while washing their feet in John 13:34-35:
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
So Maundy Thursday, as a reminder of this commandment, we will partake in the Lord’s Supper. Let us humble ourselves and love one another as Christ showed His Disciples this night.
